DJ Reviews: What do 5 stars really mean?
Nowadays, most couples start their search for wedding vendors online. You want to see the reviews, right? Nobody wants to take chances on the most important day of their life, and reading personal experiences from previous clients is a great place to start. Still, how do you sift through the endless pages of DJs, all who seem to have 5 star reviews?
The reality is that it's relatively easy for a DJ to attain a 5 star review. But as a potential client, you need to look beyond that rating, and dig deeper into the content of the testimonial. What is the bride truly happy about? Was it a great music selection? Maybe it was the way they kept people dancing all night. I've seen 5 star reviews because the DJ showed up on time. All great things!
But ask yourself this; Isn't that the bare minimum you should expect from a professional DJ service? Really, shouldn't every DJ play music and show up on time? In the real world, it is highly unlikely for someone to rate another type of service as 5 stars (flawless) based on completing the basic tasks of the job description. Why would a DJ be any different?
The "traditional DJ experience"
What comes to mind when you think of the "traditional DJ experience"? For me, I see some guy with a mullet and a Hawaiian shirt and jean shorts. He's on the microphone using a cheesy voice. He has a 6 pack under the table, and he's just showing up to have a good time. Chicken Dance, anyone? Maybe you have a similar impression. We've all heard horror stories as a result of a bad DJ ruining someone's big day. And because so many people fear the traditional DJ experience, many couples happily award a DJ who didn't show up in jeans, made a few announcements without using profanity, and played the right songs with 5 stars.
But on the most important day of your life, that just doesn't cut it. That's why I strongly encourage you to look deeper into the reviews.
Did they get 5 stars for doing the bare minimum? Or did the DJ work with couples to make their day amazing? (Ex. "He showed up on time, and was nice." vs. "Michael delivered on everything he said he would. He created a great flow to the event and made it seem effortless." -Britney, Oct 2012)
Did they just focus on music, or did they help the couple put together all aspects of their celebration to make one seamless, stress free, and engaging event? (Ex. "They played the songs we requested!" vs. "Michael did a wonderful job coordinating, planning, and DJing my wedding reception. Yes, he played music, but even more, he performed the role as our reception coordinator." -Lauren, April 2014)
Will they try to steal the show, or will they professionally work to bring together your friends and family to celebrate with you? (Ex. "We wanted a low-key DJ, and this company stayed out of sight." vs. "Absolutely the most professional, personalized, and valued part of our wedding." -Amanda May 2012)
Is communication important to you while planning the most important day of your life? (Ex. "He emailed me a list of songs so I could choose what I want played at my reception." vs. "Michael Lauren was extremely easy to communicate with. Any time I emailed him, we were able to answer all of my questions."-Jennifer, July 2014 or "He takes the time to get to know you and what kind of vision you have in mind for your big day." - Christina, July 2014 or "Michael met with us several times, and anytime we called he would always be right there, even when on vacation...-Carrie, June 2012)
